In Classical Latin "the wolf' was simply lupus, in Vulgar Latin ille lupus or lupus ille, and today the former has become le loup in French, el lobo in Spanish and il lupo in Italian, whereas the latter has produced the palindrome lupul in Rumanian (Simeon Potter).
